As Salesforce.complots its own HTML5, web-based app, but that’s just scratching the surface of how strongly the CRM and cloud computing software giant feels about the technology. During yesterday’s keynote Marc Benioff had Parker Harris do a preview demo of of touch.salesforce.com. Marc prefaced the demo flow by framing up html5′s strategic importance to salesforce and all organizations. Due to the explosion of internet connected devices (tablets and smart phones), the landscape and users needs are changing rapidly. He said salesforce moving to html5 apps is as important as the invention of the standard html for his cloud company. Apps on mobile smartphone and tablets will revolutionize the future of software
Touch.salesforce.com will be the first sales app to work seamlessly across all your smartphones and tablets. Its intuitive, touch-friendly interface offers larger icons, stackable screens, and optimized touch-targets so you can quickly find the information you need for greater productivity while on the go.
In April 2010 salesforce purchased Jigsaw for $140 million to bring Jigsaw’s Wikipedia-style crowd-sourcing model thus creating the data cloud with the goal of delivering the world’s most complete, accurate and up-to-date business contact data.
Accurate and clean data is the life blood of any database and a significant driver of end user adoption. As a salesforce.com partner and CRM Consultant, we have had years of hands-on experience with a plethora of solutions to the age old problem of stale and inaccurate data in CRMs. Consider that on average, people switch jobs every 3 years. What does that mean for your contact relationship system which you bought from OneSource or Hoovers years ago? How do you fix it?
Jigsaw is a unique solution to this problem particularly because it integrates with salesforce and empowers the user to hunt for targeted information that is useful to them. For example, if you want to generate a calling list of all marketing people in New York, in business under 10 million with employees of 25 to 200 people you can easily create that list in jigsaw and import those contacts into salesforce with a few mouse clicks.
Jigsaw released new functionality in its Jigsaw for salesforce edition this June that allows users to search for and import accounts into salesforce for free. Users can see limited contact data inside salesforce, but for email and contact information you need a salesforce Jigsaw license. There are a few ways to pay for this depending on your needs. The Jigsaw for salesforce aka JFS also allows you to create settings to automatically or manually clean data based on daily syncing. The biggest enhancement to the new integrated layout in salesforce is that you can search the native jigsaw.com website within salesforce and with a click of a button move Accounts and Contacts to salesforce. In this recent release the end user has more fields to segment data and create the right actionable list. This helps sales and marketing be more productive and close more business faster.
Currently on Jigsaw:
Contacts 27,500,000
Companies 4,200,000
Is it perfect? No, but its always improving through rapid innovation by leveraging technology and mindshare.
How does it compare to other data services like OneSource, Duns and BradStreet, Hoovers, InsideView, List Brokers, Linkedin, and Email Append Services? Try it. Seeing is believing. Have your best sales people that are CRM power users pilot it and test the quality of the data with your marketing team. My guess is you will be pleasantly surprised and a quick advocate of the service.
How much do data solutions in general Cost? We prefer to re-phase the answer and show how much value data solutions likes salesforce can provide for end user’s productivity and more deals close won. Solutions and value vary per year from: Free to $240 to $1200 ; $3000 to $5000; up to 1$12,000 to $20,000 depending on the amount of users and leads/contact information you will consume. This is why tracking Campaigns and Opportunities to lead source marketing can make decision based on empirical data. If you can show more meaningful results with Jigsaw, the focus shifts to the value of accurate fresh data to sales and marketing vs the cost.

Today’s Dreamforce 11 annoucement starts a new era for databases with salesforce.com unveiling its cloud computing solutions – database.com. Marc Benioff and his team unveiled a product at Dreamforce that will help maintain leadership in cloud computing ecosystem. Marc Benioff, chairman and CEO, salesforce.com, “Today we will redefine salesforce.com again as the world’s largest and most important enterprise cloud computing company—for applications and platforms.”
The world is moving to the cloud, and with that move the core database architecture is finally changing. The first fundamental transformation in databases in the last 30 years, and with Database.com salesforce.com is opening that data utility up to everyone with a freemium model
The foundation for any cloud service, and especially a cloud database, is trust and security. With Database.com, we have made the necessary investments to earn your trust, starting with complying with the most critical standards – ISO 27001, SAS 70, etc. – so that you know that you can trust the way we run our service. We have the physical and network security that you demand, as well as the sharing and security features built right into the database.
But what really sets Database.com apart from other databases is all of you. When new customers choose to use Database.com, they always ask us the tough questions. Some of our customers, such as Symantec, Dell, and Cisco, are among the leaders in IT security, and you can be sure when they consider using our cloud database, their security teams put us through the wringer. And you know what? Sometimes they think we can do better. What’s powerful is what happens next – when we fix an issue for one customer, instantly the database for all 87,000 of our customers just got more secure. That’s the power of multitenancy and why it matters.
And finally, Database.com is designed not just for the current generation of applications, but also for the next generation, with a built-in social data model, and optimized for mobility. If you think about it, the client/server architecture of 30 years ago simply wasn’t designed for the Internet and mobility. It was designed for a high-speed low-latency local area network. But that is not the world of today, where devices can be anywhere, and that’s where Database.com really shines.
It looks like Cloud Computing user are going to get access to a power enterprise database solution with the simplicity of the cloud the cloud that salesforce.com customers expect.

History shows Marc likes to ride the wave of whatever is hot: google, apple’s iPhone, twitter, Facebook, etc. My best guess is salesforce.com will release something around these mega-trend topics: mobile (iPhone, Android), social media, iPad/tablets, real-time search, opensource, and video for its 2011 theme.
As a Morgan Stanley alum, I always enjoy Byron Wein’s Top Ten List . For the fun of it, as a self-proclaimed cloud enthusiast, I created a list of where I think the cloud ecosystem and salesforce.com will be in 2011 and forward into the next 5-10 years.
